Social Mentor

At Alumwell Junior School, we recognise that every child is unique. Sometimes, children can sometimes experience social, emotional or behavioural difficulties that may affect their wellbeing, relationships, confidence and ability to engage positively in school. Our  Social Mentor and Play Therapist provides a safe, friendly space where children can talk, play, explore their feelings and develop the skills and have the opportunity to talk about everyday experiences and learn helpful ways to manage social situations.

Our aim is to help and support children to feel heard, understood and valued. We build on each child's strengths and interests, helping them develop confidence, resilience and positive relationships. Over time, children can learn strategies that they can use in everyday life, both in school and at home. Parents and carers play an important part in supporting children's social and emotional development. We work closely with families and school staff to understand each child's needs and provide consistent support. Where appropriate, we can share helpful ideas and strategies that parents and carers can use at home.

If you have noticed that your child is having difficulty in anyway, please speak to a member of the school office, whereby your details will be passed on to the social mentor/play therapist.  Sometimes a little extra support can make a big difference. In addition, if you feel your child may benefit from some extra support, we are fortunate to offer play therapy as a service to our pupils.
