Class 9 Blog

Welcome to our class 9 blog, where we will share all our wonderful work and learning experiences. Come back regularly to see updates! All our Year 5 spellings and times tables can be found on the main Year 5 page on the tabs at the bottom.

Class 9 Art work inspired by Magdalene Odundo

By loosely playing around with shapes, Kenyan artist Magdalene Odundo creates ideas for her ceramic pots, and the children in class 9 worked in the same way, with space around them, using two different colours of chalk and their whole bodies to make long sweeping arm movements. We were very pleased with the outcome!

Visit from Teach Rex

Before half term, Year 5 had a wonderful day meeting Thomas the Gorilla. As well as finding out about the small changes we can all make to save animals like Thomas, children created green screen animations in groups. A fabulous day was had by all, and Thomas absolutely loved our beautifully painted hall!

Learning about Mummification

We have been learning about the Ancient Egyptian process of mummification. In order to understand how the Egyptians dried out the body before wrapping it in linen, Year 5 have been mummifying tomatoes! Yes, that's right...tomatoes!

It's only been a week, so it's early days - but so far the Natron (mixture of salt and bicarbonate of soda) is working. We need to wait 40 days in total before we will see the final result. We have also changed certain variables to see if it makes a difference to the dead body (tomato). Watch this space!

Today Year 5 were visited by The Exotic Zoo. We all had a fabulous day meeting some furry, scaly, spiky and shelled friends! We took lots of photographs, so please take a look through our albums!

Postcards from Budmouth Point

This week we have been writing postcards from the perspective of Olive Bradshaw from Letters from the Lighthouse. Check out some of our work...

Postcard watercolours

Class 9 also sketched and painted the lighthouse scene for the back of their postcards. Here are just a few examples:

Class 9 Blitz Art using Oil pastels and paper silhouette.

Making use of our very own fabulous watercolour tins in English to add the final touches to our evacuee letters!

Class 9 have been writing letters home from the perspective of a World War II evacuee. They included a beautiful watercolour painting of the view from their farmhouse in Devon. We are very proud of all their hard work!
